Hypnotherapy - a tool for transformation.
James Baird coined the term hypnosis from the Greek word "hypnos" meaning "sleep". He later recognised his error and tried unsuccesfully to change the name. Hypnosis is not a sleep state, but a natural alert state of being. Repetitive commercials, advertising on TV, a good orator are all ways in which hypnosis can be induced in our daily lives.
Our minds are comprised of a conscious and a subconscious. In hypnosis we have a way of relaxing where the conscious mind (our critical factor) can be set aside for suggestions to be made directly to the subconscious mind. The subconscious works automatically, filing our environmental learning up to around five years of age. From there the conscious mind gets invloved deciding which experiences should be discarded, filed away in the subconscious, or carried to conscious awareness.
The conscious mind cannot access what is filed in the subconscious which can cause obstacles to certain information being avavilable to us for use. However, the subconscious can be accessed in hypnosis. Additional information is available to us in the hypnotic state which might assist us in looking at things in more detail, free from interference by conscious defense mechanisms.It is not,however, a magic bullit. A person seeking hypnosis as a tool in dealing with an aspect of their life has to be motivated for change to take place.
Heterohypnosis describes hypnosis assisted by a therapist, and it's often assumed that the therapist has control over the subject which is not the case. A person's moral and ethical code cannot be violated by suggestion alone. The therapist does not project hypnosis onto a subject, rather the person decides when to accept this hypnotic state and remains aware enough to refuse to participate if they choose. Some of the areas were change can be initiated include;
A few sessions may be needed for optimum results. Self hypnosis between sessions will often be required which is easily learned from the therapist. Self hypnosis can be imperative to a successful outcome and so again commitment and motivation on the part of the person seeking hypnosis is of great importance.
